Club Interviews

Summer Camp is underway and as usual, clubs are the favorite part of the students' day because they are able to participate in fun, creative but challenging activities that they enjoy doing. Media Club had a chance to visit each club and interview the lead staff member as well as a student to record their perspective of the club. We learned more about each clubs' future projects and what they've been working on so far.

Media Club

Staff:

Name: Mr. Darrien
Club: Media

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I feel that it is very important to teach children about different uses of computers and media.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like being able to show the children how to carry out certain tasks and design different things on the computer.

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“We have learned how to take professional photographs and edit photos.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today, we are working on learning how to code in conjunctions with engineering club.

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“I plan on teaching the children how to work together to produce various commercials as well as other marketing tools.”

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“It is not very difficult because I am equipped with all of the knowledge that I need.“


Student

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I chose this club because I wanted to learn how to code.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like this club because it teachers me how to use the different features available on the computer.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“We learned the beginning steps to coding.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“We are working on coding using python.”

"I would rate this club a 10 because I have a lot of fun in this club.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“ Sports is my favorite club because I love to be active and athletic.”

Sports Club

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose this club because I feel that my athleticism could benefit the children.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“ I love that I can come to work everyday and teach the children how to effectively participate in different sport.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“We discussed nutrition in the past week.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are working on a discussion about the importance of academics.”

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“I plan on teaching the importance of finance in sports. I also plan on teaching the students how to play basketball, soccer and volleyball.”

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“I don’t think this club is very difficult at all because I enjoy it so much.”

Student:

Name: Deron
Club: Sports

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I chose this club because it is fun. We are allowed to play outside and enjoy ourselves.

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like the amount of energy we get to use and the activities that we participate in.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“We have learned how to play a game named shark bait.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we discussed the importance of academics

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate it?
“I would rate this club a 10 out of 10.

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is dance because it is the most challenging club that I have participated in.”

Music

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose to teach this club because I am a musician and this is my passion.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like the enthusiasm of the students who are involved in the class. They are all so willing to learn about music.”

Q: What have you done in the club recently?
“I taught about music theory recently.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today I am teaching about scales.”

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“My plan for the future is to teach the children how to compose their own music.”

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“As I said, this is my passion so this club is not difficult at all.

Student:

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I choose this club because making music makes me happy.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like learning about playing the guitar.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently we have been practicing the song “Hello” for the culminating event.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“We are working on the song “Stitches” today.”

Q: If you could rate this club of ten, what would you rate it?
“I would rate this club a ten out of ten.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is home economics because I love cooking.”

Home Economics

Club: Home Economics

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose to teach this club because ever since I was younger I had a passion for cooking.

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“Something I like about this club is that I love being able to work with the children. I also want to teach them how to eat healthier.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently we have talked about the food groups. We have also been working on a 4 course meal that uses all of the food group.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are working on appetizers for out 4 course meal and making quesadillas.”

Q. What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“Unfortunately, this will be my last week working with this club.”

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“This club is not very difficult because there are not a lot of children in each group. With the smaller groups I am about to engage with them more.

Student:

Name: Kyla Sease
Club: Home Economics

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I chose this club because I enjoy cooking. I also like to eat food.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“The thing I like the most about this club is learning how to prepare different meals.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“So far, we have made fruit salads.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are making quesadillas.”

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate it?
“I would rate this club a 9 because I feel that I have learned great life skills.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is step because it is challenging and I enjoy challenges.”

Engineering

Name: Ms. Christele
Club: Engineering

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose to teach this club because it is closest type of science, which is what I am studying in college.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like that we are able to do different types of experiments to show how engineering is involved in our everyday lives.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“So far we have done different experiments in different S.T.E.M. fields, such as environmental science and biology.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are making a model of the animal cell using candy and other types of sweets.”

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“ I would like to have the student more involved in science. I also plan to do experiments to show how science is involved in their everyday life.”
Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“It is a little difficult to find fun engaging activities to demonstrate academic concepts but once I have their interest, they are always happy to learn.”

Student:

Club: Engineering

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I chose his club because it is fun and creative.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like the fun and creative things that we are able to do in engineering.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
We have planted plants and we have done a yeast project.”

Q: What are you working on today?
Today we are learning about animal cells and using sweets to model the cells.”

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate?
“I would rate this club a 10 because it is an awesome club.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is dance because it helps me with being athletic.”

Art

“I chose to teach this club because I love art.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like to able to explore new thing and teach the students.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently we have made ninja stars.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are going to make ninjas to go along with the ninja stars we made.”

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“I plan on teaching the children how to make a collage.

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“Yes, it is fairly difficult.”

Student:

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I want to learn how to draw.

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like that I am able treat different things.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently we have made 3D pictures.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we are working on making ninja stars.”

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate?
“I would rate this club a 7.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is sports because I am allowed to stay active.”

Dance

Staff:
Name: Ms. Jasmine
Club:  Dance

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose this club because children need to learn the fundamentals and science behind dance. They also need to learn the English behind dance and how it relates to everything. I love to teach the children about quality over quantity.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I like that I am allowed to teach my students of first club discipline. They understand respect and space. I love that in second club is my most creative and outgoing club. As for third club we have boys which showcases that boys can also dance.

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently in this club I taught the students about professionalism, teamwork, respecting each other and discipline.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“Today we ware working on discipline. I am giving different tips to teach the students discipline and going over choreography.”

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
“I plan on working on a dance movie. I would also like to show them the roles and show them how else they can contribute to dance.”

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
“There are different challenges but there aren’t many difficulties.”

Student:

Name: Melody
Club: Dance

Q: Why did you choose this club?
“I chose this club because it’s fun.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“I really like dancing.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
“Recently we have been writing about facial expressions.”

Q: What are you working on today?
“I am working on improving on my dancing skills.”

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate?
“I would rate this club a 9 out of ten.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?
“My favorite club is dance because it is so fun.

Cheerleading
Staff:

Name:  Trisha
Club: Cheerleading

Q: Why did you choose to teach this club?
“I chose to teach this club because I am a cheerleader at my school and I would like to teach the kids in the program that are interested in this club, what High School cheerleading is like.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
“What I like most about this club is the fact that I am teaching others what I enjoy to do in hopes that they will enjoy it too.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
"Recently we have taught the children stunting as well as a dance to "Uptown Funk." We also learned a new cheer."

Q: What are you working on today?
"Today we will be practicing all that the students have learned so far as well as more choreography."

Q: What do you plan on teaching them in the future?
"We plan on teaching the children how to be independent as well as about teamwork, to treat other how you want to be treat, being respectful, not to give up and to keep pushing.

Q: How difficult is it to teach this club?
"This club is not difficult at all, the most difficult part is gathering the children to get into their assigned spaces."

Student:

Name: Ariana Henry
Club: Cheerleading

Q: Why did you choose this club?
A: “ I Chose Cheerleading Because I like to learn new cheers.”

Q: What do you like most about this club?
A: “What I like most about is club is learning how to tumble.”

Q: What have you done in this club recently?
A: “Recently in this club I have learned how to do a cartwheel.”

Q: What are you working on today?
A: “ Today I am working on a new cheer.”

Q: If you could rate this club out of ten, what would you rate?
A: “If I could rate this club out of 10 I would give it a 9, because I like doing cheerleading during the school year. If Ms. Shanakay was leading cheerleading I would rate it a 10.”

Q: What is your favorite club and why?

A: “My favorite club is step, because it’s a new activity for me, I have never done step before and I would like to learn new steps and be able to perform them in front of everyone.”
